However, she is also immensely kind, forgiving, and wholesome. This leads to situations where she finds herself in danger, compromising circumstances, and other various scrapes. She is unfailingly optimistic and blind to the constrictions of society. In some respects, she is unbelievably silly. We also meet Diantha in other stories, but she does not really stand out until now. Wyn's true character was very real, very damaged, and not at all what he showed to the rest of the world. And we see the daily fight to stay clean thereafter. We see the horrible toll of alcohol detoxification that almost kills him. ![]() We see the guilt and pain that drive him to drink. In this story, we see Wyn's struggle with alcoholism. In her Acknowledgments section, Katharine recognizes many doctors and others who prefer to remain anonymous that she spoke to about alcoholism and treatment.
